Tomato lover...

I am a tomato lover.
Next to Strawberries, I think Tomatoes are my next favorite fruit.

I know a good tomato from one of those un-ripened pink tomatoes that they sell in the store. You know the ones, I'm talking about, the ones that are only good in salad (Because you'll cover them up with a dressing.)

I took matters into my own hands -- so to speak...

Last Saturday, we went to a local herb fair and I found a man selling tomato sets. I bought three and planted them when it wasn't raining. I needed to make them container plants, because the soil in our yard is mostly clay.

I've planted a beefsteak, cherry and a yellow sweet. I'm hoping that my watching my grandfather with his tomatoes will help me remember how to take care of mine.

I'm waiting -- but just barely.
I keep wanting to go out to check on them each day.
I need to get cages for them before they grow too big to cage -- and, well, e.i.e.i.o. I'm going to watch my tomatoes grow!

I haven't been able to see a single crop through harvest on Webkinz, but we've got lot's of watermelon! Apparently this is a less fussy crop.

I like homegrown tomatoes myself, being spoiled by my Dad's garden fresh tomatoes. I grew up in Southern California where tomatoes like to grow. Here in OR, well, I know of NO ONE who has had any luck growing them. We've lived here 16+ years and have made numerous attempts. Last year, we container gardened 3 pots of tomato plants and, yes, get that cage on quickly! The fruit tends to rot before they ripen. I'm unsure if I want to try again. I wish you great success with your tomatoes!

Thanks for your comment at my HSB blog. Interesting thought: If I was more like my mom, I probably wouldn't be me. And some days, I don't want to be me so that would be o.k! But no, I need to be me so I'll live with that.

Enjoy your week!
Kate

I can not wait to get mine in the ground. I wait until May 30 to plant. So do you pinch the suckers off or do you leave them?

Tomatoes are the best! We eat them all summer long from the garden and then I freeze them for sauces in the winter.

You and Scarlett would get along famously. Ever since she was little, she would rather eat tomatoes than cookies.

I was just telling The Boss this weekend that I'd like to do some container gardening with tomatoes on our deck this year. We have too many critters in our yard to sustain a real garden with any variety, but I think we could make tomatoes work on the deck. I love tomato and mayo sandwiches in the summer. MMMMM!

I love tomatoes, too... Devastatingly Handsome calls the winter ones (he won't eat them) "red styrofoam."

I love homegrown tomatoes! My grandmother still grows them and they're delicious. Enjoy.

You watched your grandfather, I watched my grandmother. I only plant them out of nostalgia- no one else but me eats them 'round here, so this year I may not do it. It is really hard to grow them here without them getting hit with blight, so usually I am only successful with cherry tomatoes-"sweet one hundreds".
