Definitely half-full...

I'm taking the advice of a very good, and wise, friend. I'm considering my glass half-full.

Which it usually is, by the way.

Our homeschool days have been full of life stuff...and we got behind from where I thought we should be in school work.

I realize, too, that I have a mindset of summer needing to be a vacation. I've also realized that it's me who really needs the vacation.

I sat down and figured out where we were in our core curriculum and when we were going to end at our current rate of learning.

The end of July.

So I've made a decision. I've decided that we're going to keep going as we're going. We'll take a day off and go to the zoo. We'll take a week off when Swim lessons happen. If we get involved in VBS, that will be a week without school work.
But there won't be an "Official" summer vacation. Maybe we'll even start our next season a bit early. Who knows, we might even take time off in September.

It's during these kind of reflections of a homeschool mom that make me realize how much our homeschool is just part of life. Which is why I talk about homeschool and kids and other stuff all in one blog. Because it's all my life. It's hard to separate them....

So our glass is half-full. Our school year is progressing nicely, all things considered. God is on the throne. All is well in the Laundry Pile.

I know many, many homeschooling families that go through the summer. Flexibility is one of the reasons (just one, because there really are so many) that we homeschool. :) Glad to see that you are okay with it because it sounds liek a good plan.

I actually love not following the public school schedule! They are so tied down. I love the flexibility. Glad all is well your way.

Even before we homeschooled we did work in the summer. I don't see the sense of weeks on end of doing nothing. Beisdes, we all tend to get on one another's nerves if we aren't busy enough!

Keep us posted!

This is exactly what we do too. Our mini breaks are never at the same time as local schools.

We kept the same schedule as the schools for the most part so our kids could play with their friends. But as any homeschool mom knows- your kids can't help learning, no matter what you do- whether it is time outside at the beach, hanging out with other families, etc. We definitely had a more lax schedule in the summer.

I school through the middle of July. In July we go to a lakehouse for a week every year. Then in August all the canning starts so we take that month off totally. every family needs to do what works for them.

I know you feel better already! Half the battle is sitting down and figuring out what works best for YOUR family. Once decided, then you can move on! Sounds like you know what you are doing! :)

Good for you! I know being a half-full type of person is good for every part of your life. And you're right. God is on His throne, so all is well.
Glad you had a good Easter. I love that 'caught red-footed' photo.
Blessings,
Paula

Love this post - I love taking a break to evaluate things from a different perspective. That's what's so valuable about letting our friends have input in our lives.

I tend to get all panicky right about now with my homeschooling - I know, it's only Kindergarten! - but this year, I'm strangely not. It's been a fun year, I've thoroughly enjoyed the non-pressure I've felt and we're learning. In fact, I may post tomorrow or Sunday about BBE learning stuff I didn't even teach him. Good stuff, not the potty stuff that big brothers love to share :) School stuff that I didn't know he already knew. Makes me feel smarter too!!! Stay tuned.

Did you get my notes on the name thing? I have had several moms comment (positively, thank goodness!) on the discussion and I keep sending them your way - maybe you'll pick up some new readers :)

Feelin' you...we are going to school through the summer, too. But it's all good - on the scorching hot day, we'll be glad to have something to keep us occupoddo!

it sounds like a plan to me. :)

And not to embarass you, but Melrose is a "he." Mr Music has issues with that, due to the pinkness, but I also have a pink pig named Precious and also a male even despite the red bow in what would be his hair if pigs had hair. I never thought about it but I guess I can't think about sharing my bed with a female.

Wonderful perspective!!! I think we all get caught up in all the "formulas" "rules" "expectations" etc. rather than living life and letting it flow - one day at a time. He does tell us to "take no thought of the morrow".

I've read lots of homeschoolers who don't take an official summer vacation. Just a week here and there or two weeks. That makes more sense to me- kids forget so much over summer vacation.
